The main action of the novel occurs on Earth from 2017 to the present, during which time the planet is overrun by dictators, then aliens. Humans learn that Earth isn’t as astronomers once believed, a far-off planet of no consequence. Rather, it’s at the centre of everything. The teeming universes of the cosmos whirl around it, mirroring and molding it, just as Dante said.
2017

Baulians pass Rule 2.7, allowing humans to live as they were prior to The Great Liberation — that is, as long as they don't interfere with the Baulians and their control of the planet.
Everything goes back to the mess it was prior to the invasion of 2018.
The only major effect on everyday life is that everyone is forced to become vegetarian, and the following areas are off-limits for humans: the best scenic lakes and beaches, all mountain peaks, the high-density bauplexes where the Baulians live (these are artistically stacked behind translucent pink electric walls), and golf courses (which cover 25% of the Earth’s surface).
