We only have a few photos of the wonderful month we spent in Mumbai, but these shots of two people we met will have to do. I interviewed the poet Nissim Ezekiel several times and spent several wonderful afternoons with him in coffee shops. We also got to know the Head of the Elphinstone College English Department, Dr. Mehroo Jussawalla. She took us to her favourite Parsi restaurants and even to a fancy evening at the Willingdon Club. Sadly, Mehroo was murdered in her home two years after we enjoyed her lively company. In the picture above she is showing us her volume on The Faerie Queene, by the 16th century English poet Edmund Spenser.

I’m afraid these photos don’t do justice to the things we saw in India — or to the many people whose warmth stays in our memory: a Bangalore guide who introduced me to several famous people; Ruby & poet; Ruby & family in Southern India. There were so many others…
